achievements

Kenya Kesho is all about creating strong, vibrant Coastal communities here on Kenya’s South Coast. Although there’s still a LOT more work to be done, we are quite pleased with our accomplishments to date. These include:

Kenya Kesho Trust Sponsored Teachers
Helping to educate Kenya’s children for Kenya’s future
As funds become available, we would like to increase the number of teachers sponsored (we currently pay full salaries for 24 teachers) by at least 5 teachers in each school each year until such time as the student/teacher ratio is acceptable. Right now, the student/teacher ratio in the region at some schools is 120/1. Clearly, this needs more attention.

  • Would YOU like to volunteer as a primary/junior teacher of any sort – English, Art, Science, Maths, Games, Computers, Carpentry, Building — anything at all? PLEASE contact us. We would love to hear from you, and your input will be appreciated by thousands.
  • You can also HELP US to sponsor more teachers with a financial contribution.

Kenya Kesho Trust Sponsored Students
Kenya’s Children and Kenya’s future…

At the moment, Kenya Kesho is paying for 16 students to attend secondary school. CAN YOU PLEASE sponsor a student today? Some of our students are very bright, and The Kenya Kesho Trust would like to provide them with the opportunity to pursue their studies outside of the public system run by the government. Instead, we’d like to give them a chance to attend a private institution here in Mombasa.

For example, the Aga Khan Academy is recognised as one of the top five schools in Africa. Therefore we’d love to be in a position to take up some places at this international school.

  • You can also HELP US to sponsor more students with a small financial contribution. See for yourself how little it costs to educate a bright student right here in our own community.

Another Kenya Kesho Trust sponsored Classroom renovation
The Kenya Kesho Trust has renovated a classroom at Mzizima Primary School. Mzizima Village is a very small fishing village and there is no formal employment, except at the school. It is mainly subsistence farming or casual fish sales. Ever since Kenya Kesho has had a presence at the school, the school average pass rate has improved considerably.

As stated earlier, access to good quality education is the key to eradicating poverty.

  • Would YOU like to donate a brick so that we can build more classrooms in our community? Once we have acquired the target (from the # of bricks donated/sponsored) for a new classroom or a school, we can get the ball rolling and start pouring the cement. It’s that EASY to make a huge educational impact on the kids in our community.

Kenya Kesho Trust Ladies
The Kenya Kesho Trust creates job opportunities for ladies in the village who sell us ‘Ufutas’ – sesame seed sweets, which are packaged and sold to tourists through Charlie Claws as a means of self-help. One sweet lady in the village has gone from zero income to approx US $130 per month through the sale of ufutas to the Kenya Kesho Trust. Another, who packages the sweeties has also gone from zero income to US $130 per month.

  • Would YOU like to HELP the impoverished members in our communities to be more self sufficient? This is possible simply by buying their arts & crafts products if and when you visit our community. We’re ‘hoping’ to have an online shop to support talented members in our community who only need a little exposure to remain self sufficient.

Our Volunteers
The volunteers with Go See Kenya have made in excess of 30 desks for the schools in this area. WE STILL NEED MORE. In at least one of our schools, 104 children are presently in the classroom with NOT ONE DESK. A desk — made by the Association of the Physically Disabled in Mombasa — will cost approx KShs 3,300- (Euro 35 or GBP 26). Read more about our volunteers on our constantly updated weblog.

Beach Clean Ups, Water & Sanitation
Kenya Kesho supervises regular beach cleanups and supplies the materials with which to carry out these cleanups. This helps create an awareness of the importance of a clean environment as well as the importance of protection of marine life. Many families in this location rely on the sea for their daily income.

Community Upkeep
Furthermore, it’s not uncommon to see our sponsored students helping out in the community. For example, the heavy bush by the Shimoni Rd and Lunga Lunga-Mombasa Rd intersection routinely needs to be landscaped in order to prevent a potential accident.

This needs to be done for safety reasons because it’s impossible to see the oncoming traffic when one approaches the intersection.

The Future
If we could see into the future…

The ultimate aim of the Kenya Kesho Trust is to build a world class secondary school in this area. We would maintain our principle of offering free education to the needy, but we would also hope to be of such a high standard that fee paying students would be poking pencils in each others backs in order to be first in the admissions queue.

We would also want to have a fully staffed clinic in the area which would address health priorities and offer quality health care programs and services on HIV/AIDS, the prevention and treatment of Malaria and to promote the ecological concepts of sanitation — re-cycling/re-using human waste and water.
